POWER OUTAGE
You have power outages for 1 -2 hours but what happens if you are out of power for 1-2 weeks?
Here are some ways to prepare for an extended power outage:
Emergency kit
Prepare an emergency kit with supplies to help you and your family be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours. This could include:
- Non-perishable food
- Water
- Torches
- Charged battery pack
- First aid kit
- Essential medications
Communication devices
Have communication devices that work without home power, such as a crank or battery radio, or a non-cordless home phone. You can also sign up for alert systems and apps for text alerts.
Alternative power sources
- Plan for batteries and other alternative power sources to meet your needs, such as a portable charger or power bank.
- Generator
Consider installing a standby generator system, which is a permanently installed generator that automatically starts up to supply electricity to your home.
Water storage
Store water for emergencies, such as three gallons per person for three days. Keep water in a cool, dark location, away from electrical wires and outlets.
Food refrigeration
Plan to use coolers and ice to extend food refrigeration. Your food will defrost in your freezers in 3+ days of no power. Do not open your refrigerators unless you absolutely have too. Some medications need refrigeration also.
Inventory
Take an inventory of your electrical needs and the items you need that rely on electricity.
Contact list
Keep a paper copy of your contact list.
Power outages can happen for a variety of reasons, including storms, vehicle crashes, ice, tree branches, and even animals.
